| Home Published Work On Alice Osborn's Book Review of "Total Immersion" (by Glenna Luschei ) in The Pedestal Magazine I had the pleasure of reading professional Raleigh-based Writer Alice Osborn's book review of Glenna Luschei's Total Immersion on the Pedestal Magazine.com website today. I read the entire review and feel compelled to purchase Glenna's book as a result of Alice's clear descriptions and perspective on Glenna's work. As a professional technical writer in a scientific realm, I had no expectations for a book review. Halfway through the review, I realized that Alice Osborn's approach was the most professional approach I have observed, and I understood that this is how a review is supposed to be conducted. I could see that Alice took her job very seriously, and that Alice herself contributes to the delight in enjoying the written word that a reader has to begin with-especially where Alice states "but her poems journey to both coasts" as a part of the review, an image I loved. I also appreciate Alice's exquisite insight in her phrase as follows: "Of course, water connotes rebirth, as well as surrender to forces beyond one's self—her book is divided into four parts, with each title relating in some way to baptism: "Immersion," "The Plunge," "Engrossed," and "Inundation." Alice includes specific sections of poetry for the reader and analyzes them in an educational yet honoring way, something I find very appealing. I like a positive approach and so frequently, I read judgmental, negative, or just plain scathing reviews; which I believe states more about the reviewer’s character. Alice finishes her review by stating the following: "Luschei cultivates the beauty in the most mundane of objects and celebrates the human spirit in every underdog triumph." If that isn't the most sacred statement, I don't know what is. This is exactly what I value, which is why I have followed Alice's work, bought her Right Lane Ends book, and continue to follow her spirit as laid out in words to enlighten us all. ―Sharon McCormick | Book Reviews for The Pedestal Magazine Book Review of "Tomato Girl" by Jayne Pupek, August 2008.
