I believe in the holistic approach: I consider the client’s audience and how they are trying to persuade the audience to accept the particular claim. Then I dig in to see if what their writing matches to their intent, and determine if they are using their credentials, and experience to their full effectiveness. Then I work on the sentence-level issues to make sure the organization flows, and each paragraph builds upon the previous one.
